Alexander McQueen was Britiains most treasured and popular fashion icon so it is with great shock and sadness that the fashion world today learnt of his suicide.

His death comes just days before London Fashion Week and just weeks before he was set to unveil his brand new collection at Paris Fashion Week in March.

Referring to him by his first name, Lee, the McQueen office released a statement saying: “On behalf of Lee McQueen’s family, Alexander McQueen today announces the tragic news that Lee McQueen, the founder and designer of the Alexander McQueen brand has been found dead at his home.

“It is a tragic loss, we are not making a comment at this time out of respect for the McQueen family.”

McQueen was born in the East End and trained in fashion in London’s exclusive Savile Row. He went on to win the British Designer of the Year awards four times between 1996 and 2003. He was also awarded a CBE as well as being named International Designer of the Year at the Council of Fashion Designer Awards.

His 2010 Spring/Summer collection was unveiled during the last Paris Fashion Week and gained huge reviews, both negative and positive. The collection included many reptile patterned mini dresses and some seriously outrageous heels that had the whole fashion world talking.

Positively bursting with coloured crystals, snakeskin and anything else you can fit on there, the shoes were the talking point of the entire collection and we can understand why!

The world of fashion is truely shocked by these recent events and the loss of such a creative and inspiring fashion designer will leave a huge hole in fashion.
