Do it the Beth Ditto Way! Cue the Curvy Woman

bethdittoThe size zero debate is once again at the forefront of the media as a result of a letter, written by British Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman, being leaked to the press. The letter, which is addressed to several high profile fashion houses, raises concerns about the need for underweight models to be used due to the miniscule sample sizes sent out by designers. Shulman even admitted photos had to be retouched to make the girls look larger.

The noughties has definitely propelled the cycle of popularity back to the approval of the curvy girl (at least in Britain). The nineties saw the rise of super-skinny models, with Kate Moss leading the movement. However, as a result of the average size of the British woman increasing, it is becoming less realistic to have mal- nourished like girls modelling clothes. Even Moss herself, although still supermodel slim, is looking much less “heroin-chic”- esque these days.

Curvier celebrities are also gaining popularity. Beth Ditto- the eccentric, lovable size 28 lead singer of The Gossip was the star of choice for the first cover of Love- a Condé Nast publication ( the same group that publishes Vogue). Her collection for Evans, the high street chain for the curvier woman, is due out on 9th July. Embodying all things that fashion normally dictates work against curves, Ditto’s collection is 80s glam electric- fantastic with sequins and big prints galore. With Ms Shulman ( who incidentally is a healthy looking woman herself) championing the way forward for the existence of non- anorexic looking models in our ad campaigns, is it only a matter of time before we see “normal” sized women on our catwalks? Only time will tell.

Whatever your size or shape, take a cue from Ditto’s collection and liven up your wardrobe with sequins and big prints.

This jacket from Topshop is Ditto worthy with its bold print design:
