The word is Wu…Jason Wu

As a continuation to my postings about Chinese fashion, I would like to extend the sphere to designers with Chinese heritage.

Fashion is currently dominated by a large number of designers and names who have a Chinese background. Many of them are US born- Alexander Wang, Derek Lam, Phillip Lim, Vera Wang. Others such as Jimmy Choo and Vivienne Tam have since moved to the West from Malaysia and China respectively. However, the Chinese (well, Taiwanese) man of the moment has to be Jason Wu.

michelle-obama-inauguration-dress-1Having been selected by Michelle Obama to dress her for the inauguration balls in a beautiful asymmetric white gown, Mrs Obama went on to select his pieces for her trip to London and for her US Vogue cover. This safely ensured that the word “Wu” was on everybody’s lips.

Born in Taipei but later moved to Vancouver, Wu attended the famous Parsons School of Design in New York. His first collection debuted in 2006 and the label has since been going from strength to strength. His spring 2009 rtw collection was elegant, ladylike and had an element of the Park Avenue Princess ala Charlotte from Sex and the City. With endorsement from Mrs Obama and many celebrities on top of being one of the finalists for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, the only place for Wu to go is up.

Liked Michelle Obama’s fairytale white dress but can’t afford the price tag? Try this version from eDressMe for a more manageable $320 (roughly £215)
