Karl Lagerfeld: Stylist of the Political World?
Karl Lagerfeld has advised that Angela Merkel, chancellor for Germany, should have her clothes made to measure. An offer perhaps…
The famous Chanel designer does seem to be offering his expert service to the leader of Germany, a very different prospect to dressing celebrities.
Karl spoke out about his thoughts that Angela Merkel needed a makeover in a recent interview, in which he stated:
“Madame Merkel should have her clothes made to measure,” Lagerfeld was of course talking about the outfit Merkel wore when welcoming US President Barack Obama to Berlin in June. She wore an ill fitting trousers and jacket combination which was unflattering.
“The proportions were bad, the cut likewise, and the trousers were too long,” added the designer, and as much as we don’t like to be mean, we are inclined to agree in this case.
It’s not that she needs to become an overnight fashionista being papped in the front row at London Fashion Week, of course she should be known first and foremost for her politics, but a little flattering power dressing certainly wouldn’t go amiss.
Angela Merkel should perhaps think herself lucky, as some of Karl Lagerfeld’s other gems of advice have been a little less constructive and rather more, well, insulting.
The outspoken designer famously said about the Middleton ladies:
“Kate Middleton has a nice silhouette and she is the right girl for that boy. I like that kind of woman, I like romantic beauties. On the other hand, her sister struggles. I don’t like the sister’s face. She should only show her back.”
He also called Adele ‘a little too fat’ and Lana Del Ray a ‘construct with all her implants’.
All I can say is, I’m glad I’m no-where near his firing line…
