Julia Roberts Airbrushed Lancome Ad is Banned: Do You Think it is Right?
We all know that now the power of Photoshop and a good digital SLR allows you to work miracles on a photo. You can use them to create something which is unrealistic. This is more prevalent in the fashion and beauty industry which depict pictures of models or celebrities who have been airbrushed beyond recognition. You can give the model a nose job or straighten their teeth without them having to go through surgery.
Well it would appear that UK in particular have decided to clamp down on this over airbrushing phenomena, by pulling down two ads from L’Oreal featuring Lancome and Maybelline products touted by Julia Roberts and Christie Turlington, shot by famed fashion photographer Mario Testino.
This ban was ignited by UK Parliament member Jo Swinson, who said that”overly perfected and unrealistic” images of women from the public sphere, was the driving force behind the ads’ ban.
Swinson claimed that the ads were too digitized and “not representative of the results the product could achieve.”
It is clear that often we see pictures of models and celebrities in magazines and ads looking absolutely fabulous. I mean who wouldn’t want Cheryl Cole’s long dark locks (ahem…even if she wears hair extensions?) or Scarlett Johansen’s flawless and radiant skin? I know that I would but the thing which is being questioned is can the products they are selling ever help you to achieve the look? Probably not and this is the argument by Joe Swinson. These type of ads are creating a unrealistic standard of beauty which many young impressionable girls aspire to be like.
