Plus-Size Models Make Hottest Cover Yet for Vogue Italia

It’s not very often that those who exceed a size 8 are given a look in where fashion is concerned, and even less so when it comes to gracing the cover of our favourite glossy magazine.

The three voluptious models chosen for the cover

So for not one, but three, plus-size models to adorn Vogue Italia’s June 2011 issue is very, very exciting. Although it’s not uncommon for fashion magazines to use the odd plus-size model for an editorial spread, not since the days of Sophie Dahl circa 2000 has a curvaceous role model had such a prominent position.

The immaculate black and white shot sees Tara Lynn, Candice Huffine and Robyn Lawley in their underwear – thighs and all! – in an image reminiscent of 1960’s Italian cinema. It screams of glamour, seduction and long over-due excitement for seeing how women should look.

The move backs a continuing campaign against pro-anorexia websites, which editor Franca Sozzani has fully immersed herself in. She recently launched the online only Vogue Curvy feature, which features style tips, trends and paying plenty of homage to voluptuous beauties such as Adele, actress Christina Hendricks and the late Hollywood siren Jane Mansfield.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Sozzani said of the ever-expanding selection of pro-anorexia websites: “Fashion has been always blamed as one of the culprits of anorexia, and our commitment is the proof that fashion is ready to get on the frontline and struggle against the disorder.” She has also been busy collecting signatures for a petition to shut down such websites to encourage eating disorders.

Sozzani has promised to feature more plus-sized models in the future. If this cover is anything to go by, those Italians are in for some smoldering magazine stands!
