Shopping – The Habit of a Lifetime

Hands up – who’s ever told a little white lie when asked by your partner what you spent on all those shopping bags you’re carrying? It’s almost a natural response and according to a Marie Claire survey, women are the worst culprits for hiding their true shopping habits from their partners, either by the odd lie about the price of something or by denying a shopping spree altogether.

The survey conducted by women’s magazine Marie Claire has found that the recession that everyone seemed so worried about has failed to curb women’s spending habits. The 1,500 women questioned by the magazine told how they continue to spend the excessive amounts on their shopping sprees, regardless of these struggling financial times we’re in at the moment. According to the results the only thing women learned to do was to lie more often about the exact amount they’d spent when spending time on the high street. The women just appeared more savvy on what to say to their partners and instead of spending less, they’d just lie more convincingly about the exact amount of the spree.

Researchers for Marie Claire magazine questioned 1,500 women aged between 20 and 40 and the survey found that forty per cent owned up to buying clothes or beauty products and then kept them a secret from their other half and 80 per cent said they had bought new clothes, shoes and handbags which they had then kept secret from their partner.

Marie Claire’s editor-in-chief Trish Halpin said that what has changed is women’s idea of how much they are willing to lie. Up until the recession hit, they would deliberately hide something from their partner only on odd occasions when they may had splurged on a designer handbag for example. Now, women seem to be making a habit out of spending money on stuff they don’t necessarily need and then lying about it, according to Halpin.
