A channel 4 documentary will be lifting the lid on some of Princess Diana’s unforgettable fashion moments, which forever cemented her as a royal fashion icon.

The one-off documentary will be aired on the 16^th and features footage of Princess Diana’s dresses selling at auction and raising over £800,000, proving just what a style icon this lady is. Women in royalty are thrust into the limelight and every outfit choice faces scrutiny not only from the public, but from the royal family themselves. Erring on a line between fashionable and demure is essential and there are some ladies who can pull it out of the bag every time.

Battling it out near the top of my list is Princess Mary of Denmark for her versatile approach to style. Even though, as royalty, there are restrictions on clothing, Princess Mary manages to still have fun with her style and show some personality through her choices. She uses colour and pattern brilliantly to liven up formal dresses as well as showcasing her beauty through classic, glamorous evening gowns, which are brought to life with bold colours or embellishment. It’s all in the detail.

1. Duchess of Cambridge: Kate Middleton

Obviously I am a little biased here, but my top spot for best dressed royal is firmly in the hands of Kate Middleton. As an advocator of the best of the British high street (favouring Reiss dress and Hobbs coats) as well as carrying off bespoke designer pieces, this lady has earned the adoration of the British masses, following in her late Mother-In-Law’s footsteps (Princess Diana). And we cannot forget the wedding dress that stunned a nation as well as people worldwide: showcasing British design house Alexander McQueen she looked every inch the impeccable royal. Since then she has gone from strength to strength, whether she be in glamorous gowns, tailored dresses, summer dresses, military pencil skirts, tailored trousers and an impressive array of dress coats… She just can’t seem to do any wrong.
