Sarah Burton Wins ‘Designer Of The Year’ at British Fashion Awards 2011
Alexander McQueen successor, Sarah Burton, has two dresses in particular to thank for her brilliant year at the helm of the British designer label. Yes, you’ve guessed right, those Royal Wedding dresses worn by Kate and Pippa Middleton.
In the run up to the Royal wedding, a whole host of designers made the ‘who designed Kate’s dress’ list, but it was Sarah Burton and Alexander McQueen that was finally revealed, much to the pleasure of the fashion industry. As Kate Middleton stepped out of her Wedding car, into Westminster Abbey, all eyes were fixed upon her delicate and intricate gown, complete with lace detailing, v-neckline, chiffon veil and applique flower detail.
Pippa’s Bridesmaid dress also went down extremely well. Made of silk, the Alexander McQueen dress featured a cowl neckline and small button detailing and showed off her slim frame perfectly.
At the 2011 British Fashion Awards, Burton was rewarded for her huge success with the title of ‘Designer of the Year’. She was presented with her award by Samantha Cameron, and said in her acceptance speech: “This feels like the icing on the cake on a really amazing year.”
The British fashion industry has gone from strength to strength and that was clear from the flurry of winners at the awards ceremony. Stella McCartney picked up the ‘Red Carpet Award’, while the likes of Alexa Chung scored the ‘Style Icon’ crown, beating off Kate Middleton herself.
Since the death of Lee McQueen back in February 2010, Sarah Burton has done great things for the Alexander McQueen label, keeping it at the forefront of British fashion. We certainly think she was deserving of the ‘Designer of the Year’ crown.
