What do you carry in your handbag? Probably your purse, mobile phone, keys and the odd bit of make-up? Nicole Colovos, the co-designer for Helmut Lang says: “I always carry my iPhone, keys, credit card and some gloss.”

What a person carries in their handbag is important to the Helmut Lang brand as Nicole Colovos and her husband Michael have designed a new range of handbags for the Helmut Lang brand for the first time since they took over the label in 2006.

Available this month, the new collection consists of bags in tough washed leather, smooth napa and zippers galore. ‘The Syn’ bag is a gorgeous half clutch half shoulder bag made from Perch skin, inspired by Michael’s past as a fisherman and Nicole’s penchant for utilitarian dressing.

“We developed all new hardware and looked at bones and bird claws for inspiration and used hints of military finishes,” Michael says.

“We wanted to create something sculptural, in an interesting fabrication, yet keep it functional,” Nicole says. “We couldn’t ask for more. Except maybe a shoe collection. Hint, hint.”

The bags will be available from Barneys in New York later this month.
