The End of Luella Bartley?

20090616_zaf_t54_049Luella Bartley, who is amongst the most celebrated of British designers, delivered the shocking news that her label, Luella, is to stop trading. A key financier has pulled out, which has effectively pulled the plug on her spring/summer 2010 line. Bartley was named Designer of the Year in 2008 and her designs, a gorgeous and sometimes eccentric blend of girlie and punky, were popular with celebrities such as Alexa Chung, Lily Allen and Sienna Miller.

Bartley said to The Guardian, “This is a very disappointing situation for everyone involved with the brand,” Bartley said. “I have had an incredible team around me and very much appreciate the support that VSQ [a subsidiary of Club 21] have given me, but it is upsetting not to be able to protect jobs in this difficult economic climate.

“I love the Luella character and hope that after we have survived this challenging time the Luella girl can have an exciting future ahead of her, whichever incarnation she takes on next. We have a number of options open to us and are considering these over the coming months.”

As shocking as it is that the recession could have caused the downfall of a label with a turnover of £9 million, this is hopefully only a a bump in the road for Luella, and not the end.
