Steal Her Style: Carey Mulligan

Submitted by on Tuesday, 5 November 2013 | No Comment

The recent film The Great Gatsby shot actress Carey Mulligan to fame as the delicately beautiful Daisy Buchanen, who has the wardrobe many women of the 1920’s dreamt of. Carey carried off the designer dresses with aplomb, but she keeps her style today minimal and chic ad oh so ladylike. StyleClone shows you just how to steal her style, as well as take it from day to night.

70th Venice International Film Festival - Miu Miu Women's Tales

This shot of Carey was taken in Venice, Italy, for the Miu Miu ‘Women’s Tales’ premiere at the 70th Venice International Film Fesstival. Mulligan looked composed and chic in a monochrome swing dress and black peep-toe t-bar heels. With her ashy blonde hair quiffed back and some leopard print statement sunglasses, the look was understated with quirky details. The retro style dress flattered her slim shape and looked striking against her porcelain skin tone. The high neckline with contrasting white collar looked smart and gave the dress a focal point.

Here’s how you can steal Carey’s style for day and night:

Steal Her Style: Carey Mulligan

The dress: New Look, £14.99

1: Sunglasses, Topshop, £16

2: Bowler bag, Dorothy Perkins, £28

3: Shoes, New Look, £22.99

4: Ring, Tatty Devine, £25

5: Clutch, Accessorize, £35

6: Shoes, Asos, £40

The little black dress is the common factor in each outfit: with the same shape as Carey’s it will flatter most figures and is simple enough to transform with accessories. The lace of the collar is a nice extra detail. For daytime, wear with these chunkier peep toe shoes from New Look. which are also not so high and would be smart enough for the office or cool enough for days out. This black and white bowler bag from Dorothy Perkins is roomy enough for your essentials during the day, and is also a striking change from a plain bag. The colour block detail looks striking and is in-keeping with the monochrome colour scheme. Finish with these animal print sunglasses (weather permitting) for that little quirky touch.

This dress easily transitions into evening wear when paired with some platform t-bar peep-toe heels with a hint of glitter to really lengthen those legs. This 1920’s inspired embellished clutch adds all the extra sparkle you need, and harkens back to Carey’s Great Gatsby glamorous alter ego. To get that animal print without the sunglasses, add this adorable ring by Tatty Devine (every piece is handmade) which is carved from topaz and will look striking against the monochrome look without taking away from the sparkle of the bag. Paint your nails black for a hint of grunge, or peach if your feeling prim and proper.
