To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Alexander McQueen skull-print scarf, Damien Hirst is set to exclusively design 30 new pieces based on the classic.

The skull-print scarf is loved and adored by so many high-profile celebrities. Kim Kardashian, Nicole Richie and Mary-Kate Olsen are just a few of many celebs that have been spotted rocking the scarf. For years, the scarf has been an iconic piece of the brand’s heritage as it was first debuted at the Spring/Summer 2003 show, designed by the late McQueen himself.

Although the original scarf will still continue to be adored by many, it will receive a huge makeover in the form of Hirst’s 30 limited-edition re-editions. The designs will have elements of Hirst’s ‘Entomology’ series which uses colourful insects to create kaleidoscopic artwork. He will intertwine his ideas with the original skull motif. He was chosen as a collaborator thanks to his “interest in symmetrical design is combined with strong references to the natural world.”

Currently, the original skull-print scarf starts retailing for £165 for a silk version but the exclusive designs in collaboration with Hirst will retail for £315, as WWD reported. McQueen boutiques and alexandermcqueen.com are the places to get your hands on the designs which will undoubtedly, sell like there’s no tomorrow. Mid-November is approximately when you will first be able to get your hands on a piece of fashion history.

Is Hirst the Man for the Job?

I think Hirst will have the creative mindset that will blow people away with these designs. His ability to think outside of the box and create seriously original and unique pieces will definitely be a plus point. Plus, he’s recently proved his ability to move from art to fashion through his collaboration with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s label ‘The Row’ and the pill-adorned backpacks he created for the line (which retail at a whopping £25,000 by the way). He’s also designed a line for Levi’s back in 2008 so definitely has experience with the industry.

I can’t wait to see what the 30 designs look like!
