The MTV music awards have been the topic of much gossip: everyone seemed to have an opinion on Miley Cyrus’ racey performance and Taylor Swift’s and Harry Styles’ awkward exchange. But, more importantly, who was the best dressed?

This year’s VMA’s saw Miley Cyrus parading around in a rubber, flesh coloured underwear set as well as Taylor Swift dedicating her teenage heartbreak song to Harry Styles (awkward). Justin Timberlake was the man of the moment, winning four awards, and Bruno Mars came away with two, one of them being best male video.

Some of the nation’s favourite music sweethearts were in attendance for this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, and all them certainly put in the effort when it came to dolling themselves up. So among the nominees and winners, who was the best dressed?

3. Katy Perry

You can’t knock this lady for bravery, that is for sure. The pop star stands out from the crowd in this animal print midi length dress with side split. For maximum impact the dress went right up to the neck and also featured gold appliqué detail to the neckline and down the centre. Katy Perry kept her footwear simple with minimalistic black strappy heeled sandals. She also pulled her hair back from her face in a severe high ponytail but with more natural make-up. While we love her for adding some drama, we can’t help thinking that this outfit does lack a bit of finesse…

2. Taylor Swift

Taylor swift showed off her slim figure in this midnight blue, body-con dress with plunging neckline. Daring and ladylike, Taylor looks every inch the star and much more grown up. In-keeping with the glamorous look, Taylor’s hair was retro-inspired in pristine curls which could have stepped straight out of the hair salon back in the 1950’s. By keeping it simple the country singer looks especially striking: the blue looks incredible against her porcelain skin and her figure has never looked better.

1. Selena Gomez

Stepping straight out of her comfort zone and racing her way up this best dressed list is pop star Selena Gomez, who also won best pop video for her song “Come and Get It.” Midnight blue seemed to be the in colour, as this is what Selena opted for too, proving that the colour is so versatile, as it looked gorgeous against her darker skin tone too. The side split and corset detail added a raunchier edge without tipping the balance too far. We think she looked incredible and deservedly steals the top spot this time.
