In the past, she has appeared in vintage sourced and upcycled dresses, but she recently stepped out onto the red carpet at the 69th Golden Globes Awards in a floor-length Giorgio Armani gown, made entirely of recycled bottles. This was Armani’s first ever foray into sustainable fashion and boy was it a success! Firth was extremely proud of the result, taking to Vogue’s blog to say: “Being Italian, I grew up with Giorgio Armani (figuratively speaking). Indeed during my youth there were only two names that symbolised Italian elegance in fashion: Armani and Valentino. To open the GCC 2012 with a stunning bespoke eco gown by Giorgio Armani – well, that is unreal.”

Firth’s accessories on the night were also eco-friendly. She wore vintage 1930s Damiani earrings, Roger Vivier shoes that had been recycled from the 2011 Oscars as well as an Alberto Parada ring made from conflict-free diamonds.

We think Livia Firth’s Green Carpet Challenge is a great campaign and more celebrities should certainly be involved. Mrs Firth recently hinted that a very famous actress has recently signed up to the challenge, but all is yet to be revealed!

Although Michelle Obama loves her designer dresses, and has wowed in gowns made by Alexander McQueen, Tracey Reese and Jason Wu, however she is also not afraid to shop a bit thrifty. She was spotted a couple of months back wearing a $35 dress from highstreet fashion retailer H&M and now she was seen wearing a top from the Asos Africa Collection whilst visiting Africa.

Not only has Michelle Obama decided to shop highstreet but has also decided to support Asos in their plight to help local communities in Africa by wearing the Asos Africa Collection. Asos worked with SOKO in Kenya to produce the Asos Africa Collection and also enable underprivileged communities to establish sustainable businesses through their local craftsmanship. The scheme will give £5 to each Asos Africa garment sold directly to help the construction of SOKO’s new workshop, which Asos Foundation matching each £5 donation.

“As a British fashion brand, with global online reach, we are thrilled at Asos to have Michelle Obama – someone who continues to be a great ambassador for fashion – flying our flag abroad,” said Asos CEO Nick Robertson.

“Asos Africa is our dedicated ethical collection, now in its third season and produced in Kenya by 25 local craftspeople to help empower the community, so it feels very appropriate to have the First Lady wearing it whilst doing valuable humanitarian work in South Africa.”

As well as the ASOS Africa collection, Asos has also been housing ethical brands such as People Tree, Fin Oslo, and Made Jewellery. The Green Room is ASOS’s online space dedicated to labels with ‘a story to tell’, featuring fair-trade, upcycled and handmade garments for the eco-fashion enthusiast.

However it isn’t Michelle Obama who is know for her thrifty and you could say ethical fashion sense as other high profile celebrities such as Kate Middleton have been spotted recycling and updating their old coats to make better use out of them. Remember Kate Middleton was first spotted wearing Katherine’s designs back in 2006 at the Cheltenham Gold Cup? The thrifty princess then had the coat recycled and shortened for her first official appearance as fiancé to Prince William back in February this year.  So will we be seeing a style and fashion evolution of more ethical and recycle clothing?  Well, as well as helping the poor it will also help our pockets too!

Launching on 14th April, the collection is for women, men and children is made from enviromentally – adapted and greener materials such as organic cotton, Tencel; and recycled polyester. H&M’s designers have been inspired by different shades of white, one of the most important colours this Spring. A minimalist, tailored look is combined with romantic lace, Broderie Anglaise, frills and draping.

“It’s not just about organic cotton any more, the possibilities for creating a complete fashion statement with eco smarter materials are huge now. By designing recurring Conscious Collections we have the opportunity to show in a variety of ways what’s possible using more sustainable fabrics,” says Ann-Sofie Johansson, H&M Head of design. “Shades of white are the season’s biggest fashion trend and it feels right for this collection. In keeping with eco friendly fashion, the high street retailer has taken left over fabrics from the Lanvin collection and turned them into a cute collection of accessories, sportswear, dresses, tunics, skirts and jackets that will be available in select stores. The collection, titled ‘Waste,’ uses several varieties of leftover fabric to create striped, graphic and harlequin patterns for the individual pieces.

“This mini collection from leftover fabrics looks absolutely wonderful,” Ann-Sofie Johansson, the head designer at H&M, said in a release. “My favorite piece is the bright, color-block tunic. It’s perfect for that first spring update.”
