Mother’s Day is fast approaching, which means the pressure to find an amazing gift is on. Let’s face it, Hallmark holiday or not…is there a Mum out there who actually wouldn’t mind not opening a present on the 14th March? Jewellery is one of the best gift options, and we don’t mean the cheesy token mothers-day pieces from a certain high-street catalogue which she’ll never actually wear.

When choosing a piece of jewellery for your mother, or any other significant person in your life, you will want to choose something timeless that can be pulled out time and time again, but still produce that look of love-at-first-sight when it’s pulled out of the wrapping paper. And of course, something that you won’t mind borrowing every now and then!

Here are a few jewellery gift ideas to get you started:

This Fendi cuff, £185 from net-a-porter isn’t in-your-face or boringly understated. It’s one of those timeless, generation bridging pieces that will make you look fabulous whether you’re a grandmother or a teenager.

Imogen Heap’s Twitter Dress

Never one to shy away from an offbeat ensemble, Imogen Heap accepted her Grammy for ‘Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical’ wearing an outfit that displayed tweets and tweetpics from her fans, via the collar on her dress and her Fendi handbag.

Fans were able to send tweets to Imogen throughout the night, which showed up on her collar while her handbag displayed pictures. She claims that the dress is her own creation, and was her own way of including her fans in the award ceremony.

I’m not quite sure how this works, but it is really nice to see a calebrity thank their fans for their success by inviting them to be present at an awards ceremony somehow!

Chanel Spring 2010 Collection: Temporary Tattoos

‘Chanel’ and ‘tattoo’ aren’t usually words you would associate with each other, especially not temporary tattoos, which evoke the image of little children rubbing tacky images of hearts and roses onto their arms.

However, Chanel are releasing the beautiful body art, or ‘Les Trompe L’œil de Chanel,’ from their Spring 2010 collection, and of course are nothing like the cheesy rub-on transfers from our childhood! These temporary tattoos are an interesting alternative to jewellery, and feature rosary beads, lace, fairytale birds, chains and of course, the double-C logo. According to Selfridges, where the transfers will be on sale from March 1st,

“Delicate and oh-so-Chanel, these delicate illusions of Chanel’s signature chain bracelets and pearls will beautify just about any part of the body you have on show. We love the garter for the thigh and the necklace over the décolleté. Forget about jewellery, this is the new way to dress up.”

Les Trompe L’œil de Chanel will be available exclusively from Selfridges from the 1st March. A set of 55 transfers will cost £49, and you can put yourself on the waiting list, or get more information by calling the counter on 0207 318 3662.

Alexa Chung Celebrity Hair Tutorial: French Braid

Alexa Chung was officially 2009’s most stylish woman, and it’s not hard to see why- her outfits are always so well put together, but she always manages to look laid-back, as though she’s not taking it too seriously and she just happened to look so amazing. Her hair in this picture really reflects the rest of her style- the looseness of this braid prevents it from looking too ‘done’, and she just looks soft and gorgeous instead of childish and twee, as french braids can sometimes do!

The french braid gives everyday hairstyles a cute (but not too cute) twist, and as Alexa demonstrates, can add an extra oomph to an evening up-do too. First things first though, you need to learn how to french braid your own hair! The video below is by emica2005 , and is really useful.

Henry Holland and Debenhams have launched a competition today that will give 36 members the unique opportunity to have their faces printed onto a limited edition H! by Henry Holland clutch and scarf, which will be stocked in 60 stores around the country in July.

All you have to do is send in a picture, but you only have until the end of January to get your entries in! Details on how to enter the competition can be found here.

The H! by Henry Holland collection is due to hit shops in March. The designer is a celebrity favourite, and is well-known for his bold prints. Prices for his collection will start at a bargainous £5…this is definitely something to keep your eyes peeled for!

Ben de Lisi Designs for Principles

I was lucky enough to attend the Ben de Lisi for Principles event in London last night, and am happy to report that Ben’s collection is fabulous!

The 106 piece collection forms a capsule wardrobe of everyday essentials as well as glamorous evening dresses, and has been designed with women aged 40+ in mind. As Ben told us, women in this age range often don’t have affordable, stylish options in clothing, and have to compromise by either dressing inappropriately young or unnecessarily dowdily.

However, the collection contains some pieces which you might want to snap up even if you’re not in the 40+ age bracket! Ben explained that the collection is ‘not groundbreaking; just full of beautiful clothes that people want to wear,’ and I have to agree. The clothes are elegant and stylish, and by no means boring. The collection features a lot of monochrome, but is broken up with lots of stripes and pops of red, blue and yellow. These are my personal favourites from the collection:

As you can see, the collection is a mix of classic staples, such as the graphic print dress and black-and white batwing tunic, glamorous evening dresses and trendy pieces. The tapered, loose-fitting trousers are bang on trend, as are the fabulous coats! The collection is comprehensive, and whether you’re dressing for work, a party or just lunch with your friends, you would be able to find something suitable here.

This collection marks the revival of the ‘Principles’ brand which was pulled last year. Debenhams decided to buy the brand, and to launch it by collaborating with Ben de Lisi, who created the famous red flowery gown that Kate Winslet wore to the Oscars in 2002. The range will be accompanied by a 46-piece collection that focuses on petite sizes. The Ben de Lisi for Principles collection will be in Debenhams stores from the 1^st of February, with prices starting from £10 for a handbag, £20 for a top, £45 for dresses and a top price of £80 for a coat.

The Noughties are behind us now, and in terms of fashion, it was a dramatic year. Lady GaGa’s outrageous style choices gripped our attention and the Battle of the Outfits between Dannii and Cheryl kept us glued to The X Factor! 2009 seemed to be a lot about people taking fashion risks, and we loved it.

Want Hair like Sarah Jessica Parker: New Pill Introduced to Straighten/Curl Hair?

Scientists have found a gene which determines curliness of hair. This could lead to a pill being developed which can straighten curly hair, or even curl straight hair!

Not only that, but the discovery that the trichohyalin gene is responsible for the curliness of a person’s hair can lead to things such as being able to predict whether a baby will be born with curly or straight hair, and may enable detectives to make more accurate efits of their suspects.

The research was carried out by scientists at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR). Professor Nick Martin, who is head of the QIMR Genetic Epidemiology Laboratory and is the author of the research, said,

“Potentially we can now develop new treatments to make hair curlier or straighter, rather than treating the hair directly. That is one angle we will be working on and which I will be discussing with a major cosmetic company in Paris in January. Also, we could certainly predict whether it was more probable that a baby would have curly or straight hair. We plan to keep working on this to improve the prediction.”

While I can’t imagine ever needing to know if my baby was going to have curly or straight hair before it was born, it will be interesting to have a new way of treating our hair, rather than subjecting it to heat torture on a daily basis! Watch this space.

Pump up your Cleavage with Debenhams Inflatable Bra!

You can now add a cup size to your cleavage by slipping inflatable pads into your bra!

Debenhams have recently started to sell the pads, which are £5, and they have proved to be a hit with shoppers. Annette Warburton, who is the head of lingerie-buying at the store, puts this down to wanting to look extra-glam for Christmas parties,

“When getting ready at work for the office Christmas party, a cleavage boost is the perfect pick-me-up to take you from day to evening glamourpuss. We predict women all over the UK will be storing these in their desk drawers ready for the mistletoe moment with the office hunk. Plus they’re easily and quickly deflated when Nigel from Accounts approaches after a few glasses of mulled wine.”

However, cleavage-boosters are popular all year round, and these pads seem a lot more convenient than the traditional alternative of liquid-filled bras. The pads, which are only £5 a pair, resemble flat chicken fillets and can easily slip into your clutch. They have a pump button which lets air in to increase the size. You can inflate it to your preferred size and then simply pop them in your bra for an instant increase in bra size without surgery!
